Critics also argue that sexting is an inappropriate behavior, especially involving minors; therefore it is acceptable and well within the state’s best interest for this behavior to remain criminalized and governed by child pornography statues.

Teenage boys and girls who engaged in sexting behaviors showed a higher risk of reporting suicidal thoughts even after controlling for cyber victimization and depression [28]. One explanation for this relationship has been suggested by Medrano et al. [28], who proposed that the relationship between sexting behaviors and depressive symptoms may be partially mediated by cyber-victimization. The exchange of intimate photos or videos increases the risk of being victimized, not only by the direct sender of the image-based sexual content but by anyone who might have access to it, as teens might find themselves involuntarily exposed to unwanted sexual content [28].

Interestingly, nonsexters were significantly less likely to engage in many of the ICT safety items personally but were more likely to endorse protecting their identity and being careful about what they post on the Web. This may suggest that nonsexters are exposing themselves less to risky behaviors on the Web and are thus less likely to need to personally protect themselves using ICT safety strategies. Whether this is because they have received better ICT safety education is unknown, but it does appear that their beliefs about protecting themselves when on the Web are more in line with ICT safety education practices, compared with those who do engage in sexting. Internet use was based on survey items used in the headspace National Youth and Parent Community Survey [30].

Sexting involves sending texts, images, or videos that are sexual in nature through your phone using texts or apps. It can be a healthy part of a relationship and sex life when two people agree. But be sure to get consent, set ground rules, and take care to protect yourself. Even if you’re as careful as possible, there’s always the chance someone else will see your explicit media. Thoroughly delete any photos or media per your agreement with your sexting partner.

But if you still feel unsure, feel free to adjust the lingo to stay inside your comfort zone language-wise. Sometimes, even when the mood is right, it can be tough to figure out what to say when you’re sexting.
